'Star Citizen' Passes $300 Million In Crowdfunding For Some Inexplicable Reason
News and opinion about video games, television, movies and the internet.
I honestly didn't think I'd be in the middle of 2020 and still writing about Star Citizen hitting insane crowdfunding milestones, but considering the never-ending insanity that is this project, I guess I shouldn't be surprised.
Star Citizen, already the largest crowdfunded project in history, just surpassed $300 million in funding from supporters. Why? I have no idea, but through the game's handy little tracker chart, something apparently happened in the month of May as it caused funding to spike from a "low" level of $4 million the previous month to $15 million, which put it over the $300 million mark. The last two days of June, the 12th and 13th, brought in about $650,000 each. What global economic meltdown? Pshh, we have a game to keep dumping money into.
The grand total right now is $300,355,763 raised from 2,712,248 people, so yes, that means the average donation per contributor is over $100, so more than any $60 box game would have cost. As ever, donating large amounts of money gets you access to loads of ships and resources and other digital goodies in the Star Citizen universe, some of which can be accessed now, others that are promised later.
Star Citizen is a video game these days, technically. It's been playable for ages now, though the "final" product may never truly exist with its development the way it's been, and what is accessible now does not seem like something utilizing a full $300 million budget, that's for sure.
There will never probably be a "yes, it's done" moment for Star Citizen and it will likely just keep operating in perpetuity the way we've seen for years now. Updates come out, players play them, new ships head to the crowdfunding store, players buy them, records continue to be set.
If after all this time, Star Citizen has come up with a digital project that is still convincing people to give them money even with $300 million in the bank, more power to them, I guess. Either the players are enjoying doing this or Star Citizen has literally invented mass mind control, I have no idea. But sure, this game can continue to exist in its own little perplexing bubble and I don't have a problem with that. Again, I do not think it will ever be completed, or ever stop raising money, but enough of it exists now where I guess I have to stop saying that it's not a game at all, which it wasn't for quite a long while.
Star Citizen hit $100 million in December 2015.
Star Citizen hit $200 million in November 2018.
Star Citizen hit $300 million in June 2020, which yes, meaning after all these years the pace of funding is actually increasing.
What a truly goofy story, the perplexing gift that keeps on giving. See you at $400 million in early 2022 at this, pace, I guess.
